Dramatizing cultural difference

Fourteen students and three faculty from the Department of Sociology & Anthropology attended a performance of the play "Human Rites" by the InterAct Theatre Company in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 7.

The play, inspired by the scholarship of anthropologists Dr. Richard Schweder and Dr. Fuambai Sia Ahmadu, grapples with issues of choice, agency and academic freedom surrounding the practice of female genital cutting in African societies. After the performance, the Lehigh group took part in a conversation with other theatergoers and playwright Seth Rozin about cultural relativism and its limits.
